High vowels
By “high vowel”, it means that the tongue is positioned as close as possible to the roof of the mouth when pronouncing the vowel.
/i/ is probably the most common vowel in the world, and /i/ is a high vowel.
Japanese language has two high vowels /i/(い) and /ɰ/(う).
Close back rounded vowel: /u/
Close back unrounded vowel: /ɰ/
Perhaps because it is precisely unrounded, that’s why there is this devoicing.
Voiceless consonants
/k, s, t, h/ are voiceless consonants in Japanese.
A voiceless consonant is a speech sound produced with closure of the vocal tract, and the vocal cords do not vibrate.
Devoicing
In Japanese Language, /i/ and /ɰ/ are devoiced when they come between two voiceless consonants (e.g. がくせい) or follows after a voiceless consonant at the end of the word (e.g. いきます).
Examples I can think of are all of which the high vowel /ɰ/ is between /s/ and /k/.
The /ɰ/ is so soft, as if it was deleted.
The result will be like as if there was a「っ」there.
As for the mechanism, according to Japanese Professor, “the mouth still takes and hold the shape of the vowel for the duration of the mora, it isn't voiced.”
The mouth holds the shape of the vowel? Didn't really get it.
When the “u” ( /ɰ/ ) in 「です」and「ます」is devoiced, the sound effect will be “des” and “mas”, the “s” will appear to be extended.
If the sound effect is really “desu”,it's probably due to the pronouncing of “u” as a rounded vowel.
If it is not the rounded vowel, it definitely will have the “des” and “mas” sound effect.

It’s been a while since I last wrote a post on this topic...
Actually, what I am able to comprehend and write is limited.
I'll do what I can.
