Japanese mystery film “Midsummer’s Equation” is a cerebral, slow-moving film that rewards those who are patient enough to look past its languid pace.

SINGAPORE: Japanese mystery film “Midsummer’s Equation” is a really slow movie.

There are no action sequences to add excitement to the film, and next to no humour to lighten the generally sombre mood.

What “Midsummer’s Equation” does have is an intriguing mystery and a truly moving storyline.

The film revolves around physics professor Manabu Yukawa (Masaharu Fukuyama) who arrives at the quiet coastal town of Harigaura, as a consultant for an energy company which wants to drill for oil in the waters off the town.

He encounters the innkeeper Setsuko Kawabata (Jun Fubuki), her nephew Kyohei Tsukazaki (Hikaru Yamazaki), as well as environmental activist Narumi Kawabata (Anne Watanabe) during his trip, and later becomes embroiled in a murder case when a guest at the inn dies under mysterious circumstances.

Yukawa must use his intellect and deductive abilities to find the murderer, and uncover the killer’s secrets.

The Hows and Whys of murder

Adapted from a series of mystery novels by Japanese author Keigo Higashino, “Midsummer’s Equation” is the sequel to 2012’s “Suspect X”.

While most detective films focus mainly on how the sleuth finds the killer, “Midsummer’s Equation” also examines why the murderer did it, and in great detail.

It leaves virtually no loose ends, taking its time to explore the emotions and motivations of each character in its cast.

“Midsummer’s Equation” also spends a lot of time setting the scene and studying the relationships between the characters.

One such example is how Yukawa slowly grows closer to young Tsukazaki, and helps him fulfill his dream of looking beneath the waves, even though he dislikes children.

Unfortunately, all this attention to detail contributes greatly to the film’s excruciatingly slow pace.

There are also no especially tense moments and no sense of urgency, with Yukawa conducting his investigation at a languid pace against the backdrop of the rustic town.

But those who have to patience to sit through the slow-moving film will be rewarded with a rather surprising end to the tale that will likely tug at their heartstrings.

3/5 stars

“Midsummer’s Equation” opens December 5.
